CA-13Deep Creek Trail
Chinese miners set up camp to search for gold here in 1886. When rumors spread that they had found much gold, Idaho cowhands entered the camp, shooting all 32 miners and supposedly burying the gold they found. No one knows if the Chinese really did find gold for it was not recovered. However, the bodies they threw into Snake River appeared near Lewiston, ID days later, causing an international scandal. The American government paid $275,000 to the Chinese ambassador. It was considered the crime of the century. Drive to Dug Bar along Salmon River in NE Oregon (may be difficult driving) and hike 5.6 miles RT.
