Uniting to Understand Racism presents an outstanding curriculum. Beyond the Oregon Trail: Oregon’s Untold History is a more inclusive history of all Oregonians, including untold stories from many groups, and an overview of racist and exclusionary laws and practices that affected us all. It recognizes pioneers for justice-those who worked to change laws and attitudes that have been a part of Oregon’s history. It is connected to an interactive website with further material and a bulletin board for teacher exchanges.

This training is appropriate for both new and master teachers who want to bring an inclusive perspective on Oregon history to their students. The curriculum, though planned as a 10-hour unit, is flexible and allows for your own creativity and expansion. It is geared toward middle school, but the information and the opportunities to address issues of race, ethnicity, and culture makes it relevant and important for all teachers. Teachers who have used the curriculum stated that it is invaluable for teaching Oregon history, civics, US history, writing, and critical thinking. It will prepare your students for their roles as citizens in our increasingly diverse society.
